President's Message
November
Greetings Burlington BPW members/friends!
Fall has definitely descended bringing cold weather, a flurry of changing leaves, snow in the mountain areas, and shorter days. I don’t generally like to look back, but if I could make the days a little longer there might be enough time to do everything and still enjoy some light time outdoors. Dressing warmly and in bright colors can chase the grey away!
In the United States, Election Day for federal offices occurs on the Tuesday following the first Monday of November. In Vermont, Election Day is on November 4 this year. Don’t forget to vote!
Veteran’s Day is on November 11. When I read the BPW Objectives of the Federation, I think of applying them to women veterans—those in training, in the field, and returning home. “To Elevate the standards” and “To promote the interests” to me means recognition of these brave women—to reach out and tell a veteran friend you can help them in whatever way you can. “To bring about a spirit of cooperation” and “To extend opportunities” suggests opening the mind to the differences in experiences our veteran women have had out of civilian life. Listen to a women vet and help her network and re-enter life in the business and professional world--this may be difficult work.
I quote “BPW Foundation conducted preliminary research and found that women veterans relatively receive less support upon return from service and generally have a difficult transition. Coupled with the issues of pay equity, work life balance and gender discrimination the plague most women, it was apparent these returning military sisters needed assistance as they returned to their careers, lives and families.” I recommend going to the website: www.bpwfoundations.org and reading more on this topic. There are many facts, information, and ways that we can all be a sister to a veteran.
November is the month that begins our rush towards the year end on December 31. It is the start of the holiday season and this year in Vermont, the start of the flu season. This is a reminder—if you have not gotten your flu shot yet, please do. This is the season to overdo with work, holiday shopping, entertaining, and special events. Take practical steps for good health and let’s all enjoy wellness.
In case you have not heard, our State President, Lindy Hatcher, has a powerful membership drive underway. She has distributed lists of attendees who visited the BPW booth at the Fall Job Expo and Senator Leahy’s 13th Annual Women’s Economic Conference. Letter(s) have been drafted and will be emailed to these women who expressed an interest in joining a Vermont BPW L.O. Burlington has an extensive list of potential new members; and I am working with MaryEllen Mendl, Membership Chair, to get these letters out quickly. This could be the start of something great for membership!
November 11 is also our Burlington BPW Business and Dinner meeting. It is on Veteran’s Day and we will present the awards to Employer of the Year, Woman of the Year, and Woman of Achievement. I look forward to seeing you all there!
Most Respectfully,
Leslie Higgins
Burlington BPW President
