President's Message

December 2009

Greetings Burlington BPW members/friends!
November is flying by and we are entering the holiday season. Plans are underway for Thanksgiving and the holiday rush of shopping, gift giving, baking, and attending special events at schools. As the days shorten, it feels like we have more to do and less time to do it. I think of family gatherings, beautiful decorations, the smell of pine and cinnamon, yummy meals and the warmth and good fortune of friends and loved ones. I also think it can be a hectic, crazy time and it is good to pace yourself.
Most importantly, it is a time to give thanks for everything that is meaningful in our lives; and it is a time to observe religious holidays and a special time to give to those in need.
There are many people alone, hungry, cold, and depressed. It is a tradition in my family to pick a charity or organization that specializes in helping those who do not have what we have especially at this time of year. Just one group that we have supported in the past is The National Coalition for the Homeless. They have many programs generating interest and funding to ease the pain of the homeless. November 15 - 21 is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. You can read about it on their website: http://www.nationalhomeless.org .
Wednesday, December 9 is our Burlington BPW Holiday Dinner and party. In the spirit of giving, we will be bringing in gifts for Women Helping Battered Women organization. If you would like to give to WHBW, please call 802-658-3131 or visit http://www.whbw.org/wish-list/ for a complete list of needs this holiday season. Please bring your unwrapped item/gift to our Holiday Party in December.
Each year we also collect donations for the Vermont Marine Corps League, which collects for their Toys for Kids program which. They need toys for children and teens as well, If you would like to give to this program – toys and cash donations are both helpful. These in kind or cash donations will also be collected on December 9, as well.
We will not hold our regular business meeting on December 9 and will instead enjoy a Yankee Gift Exchange and a Cookie Swap. Everyone is familiar with the Yankee Swap; and the limit, if you intend to purchase a gift, is $10. If you have a favorite cookie recipe, why not bake and bring the cookies and the recipe on December 9! Bring your own baggies or a container to take cookies home.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our meeting, and I send all of you warm holiday greetings.

Most Respectfully,

Leslie Higgins
