President's Message
March2010
Greetings Burlington BPW members/friends!
It is almost March and at this time of year, the weather is most unpredictable and there is nothing we can do about it. The days are longer; however, and the sun feels warmer when it is shining. Daffodil sales have begun so we feel a glimmer of spring around the corner!
Many members were unable to attend our February meeting so here is a recap of our February 10, 2010 Business and Dinner meeting.
Membership nominated and accepted the members of the Nominating Committee for the election of new officers for 2010-2011. Marie Eddy is Committee Chair and Jennifer Nachbur and Mary Claire Carroll will serve with her.
At the February 3 Board Meeting, the board reallocated funds in the amount of $30 from President Expenses to Miscellaneous Expenses which was holding a balance of $20. This will enable our L.O. to use the Miscellaneous Expenses balance to give Franklin County L.O. $50 for a Scholarship in Memory of the late Peg Colbrook. A check will be sent immediately.
The deadline for submitting our annual VSAC scholarship monies is due March 1. Marie Eddy discussed a policy change in VSAC Scholarship administration—in the future scholarship monies will go directly to the educational institutions rather than directly to recipients. VSAC will administer the monies on behalf of the scholarship donors and recipients. Membership passed a motion to accept the new policy. Last year one recipient did not use our scholarship money so the $1,000 was held in Burlington BPW’s name at VSAC. We will contribute $1,000 by March 1, 2010 and in combination with the unused $1,000, we will give $2,000 to VSAC for two scholarships once again this year.
Barbara Swinton continued with the Hope Lodge Dinner Program in February on Valentine’s Day. This is the second month our BPW has been planning and preparing dinner for Cancer patients at Hope Lodge.
And coming soon….
BPW Policy and Action Day falls on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 and will be held in Washington D.C. It is a twelve-hour day (8:00 am – 8:00 pm) inclusive of training sessions and opportunities to meet with Representatives and Senators to discuss changing and improving our workplaces. Is anyone from our L.O. planning on attending?
In March we anticipate holding the Young Careerist Program at the business/dinner meeting. There are website changes being discussed; By-Laws to be amended, and we are discussing a new membership dues collection schedule.
TheVT/ BPW Spring Board Meeting will be held on Saturday, March 20 at The Essex Resort and Spa from 9 AM until 1:30 PM. Everyone is invited so mark your calendars and join us!
Our next board meeting is Wednesday, March 3; and our next business meeting and dinner is Wednesday, March 10. There is a lot going on in our BPW L.O. so don’t miss the activity, and I hope to see you soon!
Most Respectfully,
Leslie Higgins
Burlington BPW President
